溪口，位于涟水中游的双峰县杏子境内，当地盛产一种远古化石及特种石，是制作砚品的上等原料，因地而名，史称溪石。早在清嘉庆、道光年间，溪石就颇负盛名，开发成砚台、雕像、屏风、摆件等产品，具有文化价值和收藏价值。当年的溪口镇有“玉生堂”“吉庆砚庄”近百号砚台商铺。咸丰、同治年间，曾国藩效命朝廷，溪砚成为他的“终身伴侣”。出任直隶总督时，还将溪砚做为“贡品”敬献皇上，同治帝把玩再三，龙心大悦，置于龙案使用，溪砚从此名声大振，满朝文武争相求之。

When he was the governor of Zhili, he also made Xiyan as a "tribute" to the emperor. Tongzhi emperor played with it again and again, and the dragon heart was very happy. Xiyan was used in the Dragon case. From then on, Xiyan became famous, and the civil and military forces of the Manchu Dynasty vied for it.

民国初年，抗日名将宋希濂将军的父亲宋樾生办的溪砚公司，鼎盛时期有砚工二百，砚石产品远销东南亚，享誉海外。可惜，因战乱，公司倒闭。1958年建水库后，古镇全部湮灭水下。台湾收藏家李佑增由衷赞叹：“端州端砚甲天下，溪口溪砚盖端州”。
